Story Odessa Ukraine
On the 20th of June, I walked into a bank with a Ukrainian girl friend of mine with the intention of putting some money into her account so that I could buy my domain with her Bank Card. I will be eternally grateful for her help. However, while waiting, a tall, thin blonde walked in toting a man behind her. I knew instantly, before he opened his mouth that he was an American sucker, in this bank to transfer some money to a Ukrainian website predator. The banks here are not nearly as organized as the banks in America, so this girl – who I knew was a website translator – was trying to get in to see a teller, but as I said, there was a long line.
The girl I was with told the predator in Russian that we were waiting before her. So, I tried to talk to the guy. He was quite stand-off-ish. I told him that I had been here for three years and that I had written a book and a blog for the purpose of helping people like him. He was caustically sarcastic. The translator he was with was seething. She was looking at me as if I was trying to take away her gravy train. Well, she was right. I told the guy, "I am only trying to give you some information with which to make your decisions. I thought information was the most valuable thing you could have.” He responded with agreement.
So, now, I don’t hear from him, and then, a day and a half later, I receive a letter from him. He says he has read my blog and my book and that I seem like his type of guy. So, we have a cup of coffee. He tells me that he is still communicating through the Anastasia website, and that the translator hasn’t even given him her phone number. He had spent 9 months of his life communicating with one 22 year old Ukrainian girl with the intention of marrying her. Obviously she didn’t speak any English. He finally realizes that the Ukrainian girl he thought he was in love with had never even read his letters. Needless to say, he was unhappy. Also, he had been sending this Ukrainian girl from the website, and had sent her money for her birthday and Christmas.
I have many feelings when I see this. I have anger at the website. I have anger at the man for not having been able to see the truth. I have anger at myself – because remember, I did the same things that he did. We Western men just buy into the Fairy Tale. I cannot tell you exactly why the Fairy Tale excites us so much. Also, our culture sells us on the idea that young, beautiful women are just waiting for us on the other side of the Rainbow. Obviously, that is just a fairy tale and we have stars in our eyes. The stars in our eyes prevent us from seeing the truth.
Being with him over the past coupe of weeks, helping him through the myriad of ups and downs, twists an turns, has been an adventure to say the least. In fact, last Sunday, he was hit on the back of his head and had his wallet stolen from him in the walkway from the street to the courtyard of his flat on Gogola Street.
Disappointing. For this one person, he has had one of the worst experiences a man could possibly have here in Odessa Ukraine. I feel bad for him, but I do believe in means destiny. So, we shall see what happens for him from here.
