Chornobyl and Pripyat

created: May 5, 2014

Late at night on April 26, 1986 the fourth block of the Chornobyl nuclear reactor blew up, a fire ensued, and a huge amount of radiation was released into the atmosphere just 80 km north of Kiev. Roughly 100 personnel and firefighters died in the coming months and years due to radiation exposure, over 115,000 people were evacuated from the vicinity, and 600,000 people participated in the clean-up activities within a 30-kilometer radius of the reactor. It was a major event in the history of the Soviet Union and of the entire world.
Today the Chornobyl zone can be visited if you obtain a permit. Here you will find scientists, technicians, and support personnel, the eerie abandoned city of Pripyat', abundant wildlife, and elderly people who returned home at their own risk after the evacuation and are living out their days in solitude.
The Zone is an interesting place with its own distinct culture and mentality. People here are strict and serious, as if in a Soviet military base or industrial compound. There are a lot of rules to follow. Zone workers share stories about the history of the place and about the wildlife they have observed.
